Tailing vs. Underground Diamond Mining

Tailing is the process of extracting diamonds from the waste material left over after a primary diamond mine has been exhausted. This method is typically used in older mines that have been in operation for many years.

The diamonds produced through tailing are often of lower quality due to the fact that they are found in the waste material. This is because the primary diamond-bearing ore has already been extracted, leaving behind only the lower-quality diamonds.

On the other hand, underground diamond mining involves digging deep into the earth to extract diamonds from the rock, which allows for the extraction of higher-quality diamonds. These diamonds are often found in the primary ore, which has not yet been mined or processed.

One of the benefits of tailing is that it is less expensive and less labor-intensive than underground mining. However, underground diamonds are protected from weathering and other external factors, which can result in higher clarity and quality. Additionally, underground diamonds are often found in larger, more concentrated deposits, which can result in a higher yield of diamonds overall.
