Kimberley Process Certification

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is an international certification system that aims to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds, also known as "blood diamonds." The KPCS was established in 2003 in response to concerns about the role that diamonds played in funding civil wars and other conflicts in African countries.

The KPCS is a voluntary system that relies on participating countries to implement its requirements. In order to participate in the KPCS, a country must demonstrate that it has put in place effective measures to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds and that it is able to effectively monitor and enforce these measures.

Under the KPCS, rough diamonds must be traced from the point of origin to the point of sale. To facilitate this, participating countries are required to establish a system for tracking the movement of diamonds within their borders and to issue certificates for each diamond that is exported. These certificates must include information about the origin of the diamond and the parties involved in the trade.
